“Knock on Wood: Drop” 2025
acrylic and flexible modeling paste on panel
4 × 4 inches
On my son’s second birthday he had his first known seizure. What followed was 13 months of hospital visits, medication trials, a helmet, and more tears than I can count before we finally found a combination of meds that controlled his seizures. He is now considered to have outgrown his seizure disorder, but that time was formative for my whole family. The “Knock on Wood” series commemorates this time with simple depictions of each of four different types of seizures that he had. “Drop” depicts my son’s most common seizures (myoclonic astatic), where his whole body would stiffen and then he would lose all muscle tone and drop to the ground.
