“Depression” 2024

acrylic on canvas

10 × 10 inches

Winter is dark in more than one way. We all know there is less sunlight, but we don’t always talk about how the darkness impacts our moods. When I feel the seasonal affective disorder, one of the ways it shows up is reaching out to people who are no longer in my life. In late 2024, this resulted in me feeling some strong jealousy that spurred me to start creating. Ever since, I have made more art than ever before in my life.

“Bandaged” 2025

plaster cloth on canvas

16 × 20 inches

For me, plaster cloth brings to mind two things: art school and medicine. I remember getting plaster molds made of my feet as a child who needed custom orthotics. I also remember being taught to use plaster and especially plaster cloth in art school to create 3-dimensional form and texture. Plaster cloth draped on canvas here reveals movement and 3-dimensional forms we don’t always expect to see on canvas. Leaving the underlying cloth visible reminds the viewer of the ways plaster is used to cover and bandage a broken body.

Meet the Artist

Karin Schneider is a multimedia artist based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her work transforms lived experiences of disability, chronic pain, and mental illness into textured, dimensional paintings that weave together words, materials, and meaning. Across two decades and multiple media, her practice has remained centered on giving form to what is difficult to articulate and inviting viewers to find their own reflection within it.
